2025 Recap

In addition to a few trip reports, I also wanted to start pulling together annual recaps of my year.  🏆 Positive Highlights Include: Highest High → supporting David Hedges reclaim his Nolan's 14 FKT Biggest Win → having Taylor Lehner as my partner for a full 365 days Proudest Moment → not drinking for the entirety of the year Best New Discovery → I need much less than I think; optimization is overrated Plot Twist → having a second chance at life after rockslide on the back of Mt. Princeton MVP → Taylor Lehner Honorable Mentions: Living in Steamboat from end of January to mid-April, skiing more than I ever have in my life! Quitting my W2 job, 2025 will be the last year I ever work for somebody else  Buying my second business  Key Takeaways: Optimization is Overrated: I got this idea largely from a podcast with Anton Krupicka recorded this summer. In the podcast, Anton just begs the question, "Did you get into running to slurp down 150g of carbs/hr? I didn't." T...

I am writing this blog to reflect on my experience with Nolan's 14 and June 14, 2025 a day that completely changed my life.  I was absolutely all in on Nolan's 14, consuming the majority of my free time. Nolan's, Nolan's, Nolan's. I identified every finisher I could from Strava files, random blogs, articles, etc. I pieced together and consolidated all of their splits to understand pacing to meet the sub-60 hour requirement. I analyzed everyone's training. So many different approaches. I re-read blog posts of notable finishers Joey Campanelli, David Hedges, Eric Lee, Joe Grant, Teddy Bross over and over again. Listened and re-listened to podcasts interviewing some of these folks and more. I could not get enough. I don't think I've ever been so obsessed with a goal. I wanted it to be this obsessive, it had to be. Given the insanely low success rate (for an already alpha group of humans that even contemplate doing this) I hired a coach, Tyler Fox, in Februa...

Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim 5/3/2025

I am on my laptop the morning after R^3 given I haven't been able to sleep at all from CNS / whole body being fried. This was a pretty emotional effort for me, so thought I'd get some thoughts on paper while fresh (edit: further continued throughout the following week) . Backdrop:  Brian Buell, a friend & runner, that I have such major respect for called this out in a running sheet he shared with me last summer as a major bucket list item. I was aware of it, but not all that overly interested until in early January, Taylor mentioned that it'd be really cool to go for it in May (same time she did it the year prior). We ended up locking it in for Cinco de Mayo weekend with the thought that the margarita after, would be the best tasting margarita of all time. This actually led to us discussing, "What if this was the first margarita we have all year?" to "What if this is the first drink we have of the year?" We both committed and haven't drank in 2...

Leadville 100 - Pt. 2: War First few lines of 1 of 2 pre-race docs I sent to my crew & pacers.  This one 'Pacing & Crew Guide' was focused on where I want everyone's heads to be throughout the duration of the race to maximize my chances of success.   2:30 AM Alarm goes off. I felt like I had just closed my eyes to finally fall asleep and then immediately and once again awake.  I go to the bathroom, start hydrating, and journaling. After firing myself up in my journal, I begin rolling out & stretching. Sam comes into my room shortly after I started moving around to see how I'm doing. We seemingly awkwardly chat...we both know what was ahead and I don't think he really even knew what to say. Sam, per usual, was just being extremely nice & supportive and I'm sure wanted to lighten the mood. I selfishly didn't want to converse. I wanted to get dark and stay dark.  I start getting geared up and sporadically stretching throughout the house as I wa...
